Reading a soft UK CPI print without flattening the curve story
Why services inflation and wage-sensitive components still matter when the headline undershoots consensus.
A soft headline CPI often produces an immediate bullish rates reaction. For a gilt book that is already long duration, that reaction can be the least interesting part of the morning.
What tends to matter more is whether the softness sits in goods, energy base effects, or services. Services that remain sticky while the headline cools leave the front end and the Bank Rate path only partially convinced. In impact reviews we ask clients to name whether their risk is to the policy path, to break-evens, or to sterling credit spreads — because a soft print does not move those three the same way.
Before the next CPI, write down the surprise threshold that would force a conversation in your committee. If you cannot name it, the post-release note will struggle to be decisive.
